This infobox is meant for communes (the lowest level of administrative division) in France. It can process data from French wikipedia, and from previous versions of the infobox. You can copy an infobox from French wikipedia, or create one starting from an infobox for another town, or starting from scratch. This is an empty infobox with all available fields (English names). The contents of the parameter fields, and which ones are optional, are explained below.

[edit] How to copy an infobox from French wikipedia

All French communes have an article with an infobox in French wikipedia. Each French communes article in English wikipedia should have a link to the corresponding French article, in the "languages" box. If the link is incorrect or leads to a disambiguation or a redirect, please correct it.

You can copy the infobox code from the French article directly into the English article. You don't have to change the template name (e.g. "Infobox Commune de France", "Tableau comm", "Communefra") , because they redirect to this template. You don't have to change the parameter field names either. However, there are some points of attention:

• articles exist for all regions, departments and arrondissements. If they give a red link in the infobox, that means that the link in the infobox is incorrect, e.g. Hérault (département) and Arrondissement du Blanc. You can either look up the correct link (in these cases Hérault and Arrondissement of Le Blanc), or just enter the name (department=Hérault and arrondissement=Le Blanc), this will create an automatic link towards the correct article
• most cantons do not have an article (yet). The standard article title will be "Canton of X", e.g. Canton of Le Blanc. Entering just the name in the field, e.g. canton=Le Blanc, will display the unlinked name if no article exists for the canton, and a link to Canton of X if it exists.
• most intercommunalities ("Communauté de communes de ...", "Communauté d'agglomération de ...") do not have an article. You can choose to leave the link there, or replace it by the simple, unlinked name. If the field intercomm only says "sans", remove it, because that means that the commune is not part of an intercommunality.
• check if there is already a {{coord}} template in the article, and remove it. If there is, it will display two superimposed=unintelligible coordinate tags in the title, top right.
• check if the infobox looks OK after you've saved it, and if there is a map under "Location". If there isn't you may have to add coordinates (see "longitude, latitude" below)

[edit] Parameters

Most parameter fields can have both an English and a French name. Either the French or English parameter name can be used, depending on copying infobox data from other sources. Note that the field name is case sensitive, it should be lower case. Some lesser used fields are not discussed (yet) in this overview.

Required parameters are displayed in orange.

[edit] name or nomcommune

English name of location. If this field is not specified, the article name is used.

[edit] native_name

French name of location. Use only if French name is different from English name (e.g. Dunkirk - Dunkerque). Sometimes used for regional languages, such as Breton and Catalan.

[edit] image_flag, image_coat_of_arms etc

The official flag and coat of arms of the commune. This part of the infobox needs some maintenance. It currently only works when both a flag and a coat of arms are specified. See the infoboxes of Paris and Marseille for examples.

A representative picture of the location: skyline, notable landmark, etc. The image used should preferably be wider than it is tall, to keep the infobox as compact as possible. Full wiki syntax should be given, e.g. [[Image:Vieux port de Marseille 2.jpg|270px]].

The caption for this picture (optional).

[edit] map, adjustable_map, image_map

Avoid, except for overseas departments and territories. For locations in metropolitan (=European) France, an automatic map is generated if the coordinates are given in the "longitude" and "latitude" fields (see below). For locations in the overseas departments and territories (e.g. French Guiana, New Caledonia, Réunion), this automatic map will give strange results. In these cases, manual location maps ("map", "adjustable_map") or a calculated dot-on-map ("image_map") must be used.

• "map": Specify only the file name of the map image, e.g. "Cayenne.PNG".
• "adjustable_map": Specify the file name of the map image, e.g. "adjustable_map=Cayenne.PNG", and the width in the field "map_size", e.g. "map_size=200px".
• "image_map": Specify the file name of the blank map image, e.g. "image_map=France_jms.png", and the pointer position fields "x" and "y", e.g. "x=195" and "y=123".

[edit] longitude, latitude

Needed. Geographical coordinates of location. Give location in decimals. Northern hemisphere and eastern hemisphere have positive numbers. The coordinates are used for map calculation, and they are also shown next to the title, in degree-minute-second format (with a link to external map websites). Do not enter degree-minute-second format data in this field, because the map cannot be calculated with those, and they are not shown in the title either. If the coordinates are not available in French or Dutch ("Nederlands") wikipedia, you can look them up at the website of the Institut Géographique National] (you can search with the INSEE number or the name of the commune, results under "Catégorie Geographic informations", use the numbers labeled "ED50" and convert them to decimal. Minimum and maximum elevation are also given).

For metropolitan France, this could be [[Central European Time|CET]]/[[Central European Summer Time|CEST]] ([[UTC+1]]/[[UTC+2|+2]]).

Avoid. This field has been replaced by the "longitude" and "latitude" fields.

Needed. The region to which the location belongs. No wikilinks required. Some overseas locations are not part of a region. Special fields are used for these locations.

Needed. The department to which the location belongs. No wikilinks required. Some overseas locations are not part of a department.

[edit] arrondissement

Needed. The arrondissement to which the location belongs. No wikilinks required. Some overseas locations are not part of an arrondissement. The largest cities (e.g. Paris, Lyon, Marseille) are subdivided into arrondissements themselves. In those cases, use the "subdivisions" field instead.

Needed. The canton to which the location belongs. No wikilinks required. Some overseas locations are not part of a canton. Some locations, usually the larger cities, are subdivided into cantons themselves. In those cases, use the "subdivisions" field instead.

Some locations, usually the larger cities, are subdivided into arrondissements or cantons. In those cases, fill in something like "subdivisions=9 arrondissements". A link to an article about these subdivisions can also go here.

Many communes cooperate in an intercommunality.

The mayor of the commune. Optionally, the governing period of the mayor can be given in the field "mandat".

The minimum, maximum, and average elevation of the commune above sea level. Add the unit (m or ft).

The area of the commune in square kilometers.

The population of the commune. The census year should be given in the field "date-population" (French version: "date-sans").

The population density of the commune.

The postal code(s) of the commune.

The INSEE (French national statistics institute) code of the commune.

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book.
