Template:FreeContentMeta

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[[{{{3}}}|left|50px| ]]

This template serves as a way to create boxes similar to those for sister projects such as Wikiquote. Such boxes should only be created for active projects that make their content available under a free license. They should only be put on articles where the article on the project being linked to has material that the Wikipedia article does not, and that it is outside the purview of Wikipedia to include such as extensive in-universe information for fictional topics, or extensive amounts of raw data and source material. They should NOT be used to link to information that would be considered too unreliable or inflammatory for Wikipedia, or to free content resources that exist primarily to advance a particular agenda or point of view.

This template is designed to work with projects running MediaWiki, and uses the m:Interwiki Map to make sure that it is only linking to free content sites.

This template should be used with subst: in order to create child templates. The meta-template takes the following arguments in order:

  1. Name of the wiki.
  2. interwiki prefix for the Wiki (See m:Interwiki Map for details).
  3. Image to be used as the logo. Please note that logos that are derivative works of copyrighted works not released under a free content license are unacceptable for templates per Non-free content criteria #9.

In some cases the wiki being linked to will have different article names than Wikipedia for the same topic. (For example, if Wikipedia needs to disambiguate among multiple subjects while a more specialized Wiki does not). In this case, the following modification can be made to a template created with this template.

  • Change {{PAGENAMEE}} to {{{1|{{PAGENAMEE}}}}}
  • Change {{PAGENAME}} to {{{1|PAGENAME}}}}}

The resulting template will take one optional argument - the name of the article at the wiki that you are linking to.

After creating a child template, it should be added to Wikipedia:List of templates linking to other free content projects.
