I think the review of "Free your mind and your ass will follow" reveals a lack of perception about Black culture and themes of enslavement. The "ass" is not "vile"...as the reviewer suggests in his/her pseudo-Freudian interpretation...an ass is just an ass, and would smell as sweet - or funky - by any other name. (after all, we are talking about Funkadelic here!)
Blacks have never been truly "free" in America, in terms of equal opportunity, or equal treatment under the law.
The idea that your "ass is owned" by somebody was/is a fairly common sentiment.
The title is incredibly eloquent: Your ass will never be free until - and unless - you free your mind of the shackles which help keep you imprisoned - whether it be low self-esteem, an inferiority complex, or just plain ignorance.
