Indirect Senate elections will be held for half of the seats in the French Senate in September 2008. With this election, the number of senators will be increased from 331 to 343; Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin will elect senators for the first time. Furthermore, this election will be the first under a new system: Previously, senators were elected in three tranches for nine-year terms. Under the new system, senators are elected for six-year terms in two tranches.
