Fremont Peak State Park is a state park located in California. It provides an opportunity to view Monterey Bay, as well as several other areas. This park features expansive views of Monterey Bay, from its hiking trails in the grasslands of the higher peaks of the Gavilan Range. Other views include the San Benito Valley, Salinas Valley, and the Santa Lucia Mountains east of Big Sur.

Fremont Peak Observatory opened in 1986, and has operated every summer since, despite having battled the frequently brutal weather on the 3,000 foot peak.

Pine and oak woodlands in the park are home to many birds and mammals.

The park also features an astronomical observatory with a 30-inch telescope.

[edit] Proposed for closure

Fremont Peak State Park is is one of the 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program.[1]
