[edit] History

The first Fremantle railway station, 1881.

The original Fremantle railway station was constructed in 1881 next to Cliff Street. In 1907 the current station was opened at its present location. The station was an important hub for gold miners arriving to Western Australia via ship and then travelling on the Eastern railway to the goldfields.

The Fremantle line was closed by the State Government in September 1979. It re-opened in July 1983.

The station was entered into the Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register of Heritage Places in 2001. The rationalisation of the rail reserve in 2004 was part of a plan to revitalise the precinct. In 2005 the first stage of a $6.3 million project to restore the station was completed. Two further stages are planned, for completion by 2007.
