Free Ride is a song written by Dan Hartman and performed by the The Edgar Winter Group. The single was a top 20 US hit in 1973. The song is featured in the movies Air America, Dazed and Confused, Jack Frost, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, and "Days Of Thunder". It was covered by R&B group Tavares (1975) and Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline (1995).
The 45 version is a different recording than the LP version, but both versions clock in at 3:08.
On February 20, 2007, American Idol contestant Rudy Cárdenas opened season 6 of the television show by performing a version of Free Ride. The performance was met with less than enthusiastic reviews from the show's judges, and Rudy was one of the first contestants to be cut from the competition.
The song appears as one of the tracks in the video game, Cars, based on the Disney/Pixar movie of the same name.
A variation of the song is also used in advertising by New Zealand digital TV provider Freeview.
