Free Cossacks (Ukrainian: Вільне козацтво) were Ukrainian volunteer militia units who arose spontaneously and organized themselves during the Ukrainian War of Independence in Zvenyhorodka, near Kiev. In October their chief commander became Pavlo Skoropadskyi. The units distinguished themselves during the Ukrainian-Soviet War (particularly from December 1917 to April 1918) and were disbanded around May and June 1918.
