[edit] Biography
Frederick William was born in Schloss Umkirch. He is the oldest son of Friedrich, Prince of Hohenzollern (1891-1965) and his wife, Princess Margarete of Saxony (1900-1962), the daughter of the last King of Saxony Frederick Augustus III. He became the head of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen on the 6 February 1965 following the death of his father Prince Friedrich. According to the Romanian succession laws of the kingdom's last democratic Constitution of 1923, upon the death of King Michael, provided he dies without any male children as is now likely, Prince Frederick William will likely inherit the rights of succession to the Romanian throne, although it is debated that his grandfather's renunciation to the Romanian throne in favor of his brother, King Ferdinand I of Romania, deprives him of any such rights (see "Line of succession to the Romanian throne").
Prince Frederick William married Princess Margarita of Leiningen (1932-1996) on the 3 February 1951 and they had three children.
- Hereditary Prince Karl Friedrich of Hohenzollern (born 1952)
- Prince Albrecht of Hohenzollern (born 1954)
- Prince Ferdinand of Hohenzollern (born 1960)
