[edit] History
Land was purchased for building a new high school on October 10, 1950. On January 2, 1951, the school board voted to name the school Fred T. Foard High School after Dr. Fred T. Foard, a member of the Catawaba County Board of Education from 1923 to 1931. Construction began on the high school on June 4, 1951. The school was originally built on 25 acres and would hold 455 students.
[edit] Athletics
The mascot is the Tiger (the women's teams are Lady Tigers) and the school colors are Columbia Blue and White. The athletic department also uses Navy Blue and Orange to accent the main colors. Fred T. Foard is a North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A classified school. Foard's athletic teams compete in the nine-team Catawba Valley Athletic Conference. Fred T. Foard is especially noted for having very strong women's teams. All eleven state championships won in the history of the school are women's sports. Most recently, the volleyball team claimed their 6th state title. The women's basketball team won the 3A west regional, but fell in the State Championship game. Tiger fans pack tiny Jerry Copas Gymnasium for men's and women's basketball games and volleyball games, making it a very intimidating environment for opponents to play in. The gym is noted for how loud it becomes and the sweltering heat on gamenights. Fred T. Foard's primary rival is neighboring Hickory High School. There is no air conditioning in the gym. The softball team has been conference champions 2 years in a row.
