Fred Cress

Fred Cress, born 1938, was an Australian artist who won the Archibald Prize in 1988 with a portrait of John Beard.
Fred Cress was known for sometimes unusually painting with a spray gun. He was born in India and arrived in Australia in 1962. He started his career as an artist doing figurative works, then doing more abstract work in the late 1960s, and coming back to figurative painting after he won the Archibald Prize. He was awarded an Australia Medal in 2003 for services to the Visual Arts.
