[edit] A welcome from Sputnik

Hi, FranzJacobs, Welcome to Wikipedia!
Hello, bonjour, salut, privyet, konichiwa, shalom, hola, salve, sala'am, bonjourno, and hi! I'm Sputnik. I noticed that you were new and/or have yet to receive any messages so I just thought I'd pop in to say "hello". We're glad to have you in our community! I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it's so big but we won't bite so Be Bold and get what you know down in microchips! If you do make a mistake, that's fine, we'll assume good faith and just correct you: it'll take a few seconds maximum! I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Though we all make goofy mistakes, here is what Wikipedia is not. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to see the help pages or add a question to the village pump. The Community Portal can also be very useful. If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you. Here are a few links to get you started:
And remember:
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.
  • P.S. I'm happy to help new users. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you need help with anything or simply wish to say hello. :)

Happy Wiki-ing!

[edit] Wikipedia's LGBT Community

Hi, FranzJacobs!
You've indicated through various means (a userbox, membership in a category, etc) that you are part of the Wikipedia LGBT community, or are interested in Wikipedia's LGBT related pages. Welcome!

You may not know that Wikipedia has both an LGBT Notice Board and an LGBT Studies WikiProject. If you haven't yet done so, take a look at both of them. They sorely need attention and participation!

Some things on the "To-Do List" that merit particular attention include:

  1. Identifying topics/pages that need attention
  2. Identifying problems that need addressing
  1. Adding the LGBT Template to appropriate pages
  2. Categorizing LGBT pages

Please feel free to participate in any or all of these activities! And if you feel like it, add yourself to either the Noticeboard Members or the WikiProject Participants - or both!

Glad you're a part of Wikipedia - and Thanks! This invitation posted here by SatyrTN -- talk
Please remove it if you so desire.

[edit] Dickson Experimental Sound Film

Hi, Franz. That's a great observation about the film's music. My only hesitation in incorporating it in the article as evidence suggesting Dickson intended a joke (completely plausible), is that I've been unable to find a single authoritative published source confirming that the tune is "Song of the Cabin Boy"; if you have one--or even an unimpeachable online source (rather than one referencing someone else and/or with clear errors, which is all I've found), let's run with it. (Note: the credits listing following the brief Murch note on the restoration says the music is the Barcarolle from the Planquette operetta [which those same credits mistitle]. Is "Song of the Cabin Boy" the operetta's one and only barcarolle?) Best, Dan—DCGeist 05:13, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Addendum: Just by the way, in most cases, if you, as a serious and careful Wikipedia editor (which is clear from your contributions), were able to attest that you had listened to the music in the film, compared it directly to "Song of the Cabin Boy," and identified them as unquestionably the same music, that would be good enough for me. Some people call that "original research"; it isn't (see Wikipedia:No_original_research#What is excluded?), it's just good fact-checking. However, we do have this substantial online source claiming the music is from Mascagni. I certainly doubt the claim, but I think we need to come up with a source that's clearly stronger in order to make any statements about the music's meaning. Brilliant. Thanks very much, Franz. Best, D —DCGeist 23:09, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:DerMudeTodDVD.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:DerMudeTodDVD.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Thirdship (talk) 08:20, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Phantom1922DVD.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:Phantom1922DVD.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 16:26, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
