Jan van Oort, son of singer Hendrik van Oort, was born in Soest in 1921. His father was a concert singer, but also published sheet music under the pseudonym Henri Dulieu (the literal French translation of their Dutch name). Jan van Oort studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and became second violinist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. When, during the Dutch famine of 1944, the activities of the orchestra stopped, he started drawing, inspired by his grandfather Johan Braakensiek, illustrator for the magazine De Groene Amsterdammer and the books of Dik Trom by Cornelis Johannes Kieviet.

Jean Dulieu died in Arnhem on November 29, 2006.
