[edit] Birthplace ambiguity
The likely cause of this ambiguity is due to the fact that the principle local hospital, Mountainside hospital sits directly on the border between Montclair and GlenRidge and over the years through various remodelings and renovations the maternity ward within the hospital, the official location for the "place of birth" has moved several times over the decades.
Though this presumes he was born in the hospital (considering a semi-upscale suburban neighborhood likely but by no means certain) even so, even in the 1920's the area was well built up and many homes were directly on the border, so exactly which town clerk had jurisdiction would be questionable.
GlenRidge, NJ and Montclair, NJ are NOT two miles apart. Both towns are built up suburban "Bedroom" communities that border on one another. While Glen ridge is scarcely half a mile wide east to west at it's widest point and less than three miles long north to south, most (~3/4) of Glen Ridge's western Border is against montclair, so it can be safely said that NO PART of glen ridge is more than 0.75 miles from montclair.
the map information can be misleading and in this case greatly so.
I will endevour to aquire a copy of his birth record from each of the two towns to settle this issue. My making a special stop next time I'm there seems a small price to pay for accurate history
