Franz Cižek

Franz Cižek (12 June 1865 - 17 Dec 1946) was an Austrian genre and portrait painter as well as a teacher and reformer of art education. Cižek was born in Leitmeritz, in northern Bohemia (now Litomerice, Czech Republic) and studied painting under the German painters Franz Rumpler and Josef Mathias von Trenkwald at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He was the among the first to encourage spontaneous artistic activity in children in his school of painting and drawing. In 1904 he was appointed director of the Department of Experimentation and Research at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
