[edit] Men In Black

In the first movie of the series, Frank the pug appears at a small kiosk next to a man selling souvenirs. He is wearing a souvenir sweater, apparently displaying it. When Agent J assumes that the strange man is an alien in disguise, he is shocked to discover that the alien is actually Frank. In the film, Frank acts as an informant for MiB, providing Agent K information on the "galaxy" referred to by the Arquillians. Frank reveals vital information to the agents (and the audience), that the galaxy is actually on Earth. Frank also points out that humans must learn to understand the notion of scope in the universe; i.e. a very important and grand thing can be very small. It is worth noting that Frank, being a very small dog with small screen time, is actually a key part of the movie.

[edit] Men in Black II

In Men in Black II, Frank was given a bigger role as director Barry Sonnenfeld enjoyed the dog's performance in the previous film. In this film he appears to be an employee at MIB HQ. He first appears while delivering passports to Chief Zed's office. Zed is speaking with Agent J about a killing that he wants him and Agent T (Patrick Warburton) to investigate, but Agent J informs him that he had previously neuralyzed Agent T. Zed comments on J's problem with neuralyzing agents and Frank then volunteers to be J's new partner. Frank, now known as "Agent F" and wearing an MIB uniform, is seen singing a few lines of I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor as he rides with J to the scene of the crime. When Agent K is "deneuralyzed", Frank steps down as Agent J's partner, but becomes Agent Zed's personal assistant, because the job offers "better dental". In his penultimate scene in the movie, he identifies himself as a Remoolian.

[edit] Men in Black: The Series

Frank appeared in a few episodes of Men In Black: The Series, with virtually the same role as in the previous two films. Humorously, Frank's true alien form still resembles a pug, albeit with a dark green color and antenna. However, the series is usually not considered canon.

[edit] Animal actor

Frank was portrayed in both movies by a pug named "Mushu". Mushu was very well trained, especially for a pug, and was faithful and precise in his actions. The CG animators found their task easy since Mushu was so aware of and responsive to the environment, which is unusual for an animal actor. Mushu's ability to complete takes with little or no reshoot also reduced total filming time and saved the studio money.
