Frank Weston [1] (13 September 18712 November 1924) was Bishop of Zanzibar from 1908[2] until his death 16 years later. Born into a clerical family[3], he was educated at Dulwich College and Trinity College, Oxford before being ordained priest in 1906. After a Curacy in Westminster [4]he was to spend the rest of his life in Zanzibar [5]. A staunch Anglo Catholic [6]he was Chaplain then Principal of St Andrew's College[7] before ascending to the Episcopate [8]. Already known within the church as a man of principle[9] he was responsible for one of the deepest disputes within the Anglican communion. It stemmed from a conference at Kikuyu where representatives from many Christian churches discussed how to repel the perceived threat from non-Christian groups[10]. The general consensus of opinion seemed to be that a loose alliance of different groups(Methodist, Presbyterian etc) was the best way of moving forward. Weston immediately accused the proponents such as the Bishop of Mombassa of Heresy [11]. The onset of war caused the issue to fade from prominence and Weston himself served with distinction during the conflict, being awarded an OBE for his role as Major commanding the Zanzibar Carryng Corps[12]. The post-war years saw him become increasingly influential and he died, aged 63, much mourned and widely praised[13].
