Frank Mullen

Frank Mullen, born January 1970, is the singer of New York Death Metal band Suffocation, and met fellow band mates Mike Smith and Terrance Hobbs in high school. He is recognized to be among the first to bring low-pitched vocals in death metal. His approach on Effigy of the Forgotten could be considered to be the "blueprint" to the death grunt as we know it today. On later releases, notably Pierced from Within, his range was extended above a monotonal grunt.[citation needed] Unlike some death metal vocalists, his lyrics are pronounced more clearly. He achieves this by simply opening his mouth wider, but amazingly still retaining his low-pitched grunts. Lyrically, his work has covered a range of topics: earlier pieces being iconically brutal: having being credited as one of the founders of the Brutal Death Metal theme. Frank is one of the few Death Metal vocalists to achieve such a loud, distinct and distorted vocal style without the use of external effects. Frank also has a daughter, Rayna Mullen, who is also a signer.
