Frank Madsen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frank Madsen is a contemporary Danish illustrator and cartoonist. He is the author of Kurt Dunder created in the ligne claire style also known from Hergé's Tintin.

Frank Bruun Madsen was born in 1962 in the Danish town of Kalundborg.

Frank Madsen started work on Kurt Dunder in 1988, which was serialized in a magazine. In 1991 the story, Kurt Dunder in Africa (Kurt Dunder i Afrika), was published as an album by Carlsen Comics. Kurt Dunder in Greenland (Kurt Dunder på Grønland) came out in 1994. The third, Kurt Dunder in Tirol (Kurt Dunder i Tyrol) was published in 2000.

The currently last episode of the series Kurt Dunder and the Nannobots was published in the first Danish manga magazine Kurt Dunder & Kompagni. This title is actually a pun on the Danish title of Donald Duck magazine (Danish: "Anders And & Company") published by Egmont, showing Frank Madsens close connection to and affection for this Danish cartoon magazine, which has been published since the early fifties.

In 1996, Frank Madsen was the first comics artist in Denmark to publish his comic on the world wide web, putting up Kurt Dunder’s Living Room as a highly interactive site, that in the past year has been a popular destination for thousands of web-surfers from Singapore to Los Angeles.

Frank Madsen is one of the most talented and versatile Danish comics creators. He works with b/w expressionism, the "ligne claire" style, funny animals à la Barks and superhero action.

Frank Madsen has also initiated the organization of the Danish comics creators into an association since 1988, "Danske Tegneserieskabere" (Danish Comics Artists), and the comics magazines Serieskaberen and Seriejournalen. These have been characterized by his careful editorial work and by good, engaging articles. Seriejournalen can still be found on the World Wide Web.
