In 1996, after a moment of inspiration, Rich has been quoted saying:

"It struck me that alcohol had become society’s whipping boy. An army of special interest groups were beating their sins into it, and very few were standing up in its defense. Alcohol has been with us since we started calling ourselves human, through floods and famine, war and peace, our constant loyal companion, and now a smug gang was laying into it like it was some filthy stranger who’d crept into their bedroom while they were sleeping. I wanted to get into the trenches and defend it. I wanted to celebrate it."[2]

Rich conceived the idea of a new periodical called Modern Drunkard Magazine, to challenge the currently (as Rich saw it) overly-prohibitionist sentiment of the American mainstream, and in August 1996, The Modern Drunkard Magazine was born.
