Francisco Castel Rodrigo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francisco de Moura Cortereal, Marquis of Castel Rodrigo (1610 - November 26, 1675) was a Spanish political figure.

He served as Viceroy of Sardinia between 1657 and 1661, and Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands between 1664 and 1668.

Francisco de Moura Cortereal was the third marquis of Castel Rodrigo, and son of Manuel de Moura y Corte Real, who had also been Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands, between 1644 and 1647.

During his reign, the Spanish Netherlands suffered a French invasion during the War of Devolution. By now, Spain was so weak that it could put up little resistance to the French assault. The French even spoke of "une promenade militaire."
