The boxer Francisc Vaştag (Hungarian: Vastag Ferenc) was the first Romanian to win the supreme belt in his category. His victory greatly stimulated boxing in Romania. The champion boxer Adrian Diaconu has said that he considers Vaştag to be a brother and mentor.
