Francis Gurry

Dr. Francis Gurry (born May 17, 1951 [1]) is a former Australian attorney, [2] current Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and, since May 13, 2008, Director General-elect of WIPO. [3]

He was appointed to the post of Deputy Director General of the WIPO in 2003. [1] He joined the WIPO in 1985. [4] He holds law degrees from the University of Melbourne and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. [2] Francis Gurry is also the founder and head of WIPO's Arbitration and Mediation Center. [4]

He was nominated as a candidate for the position of Director-General of WIPO in 2008, [5] and won the election on May 13, 2008. [3] The WIPO General Assembly will appoint him to the position at its next meeting, currently scheduled to take place from September 22 to 30, 2008. [3] Dr Gurry will then formally take up the duties of Director General on October 1, 2008, following appointment by the General Assembly. [3]
