[edit] Research on Francestown Municipal Cemeteries

[edit] Cemetery 1

The land for Cemetery One was cleared on April 10, 1773. The first person buried there was Mrs. Bathsheba Epps Dickerman, wife of Samuel Dickerman, who died May 1, 1773, aged 20 years. The first adult death in the Francestown settlement was that of Caleb Whiting in the spring of 1770; and the second that of Janet McMaster, October 4, 1772. These were taken to New Boston, as was also the body of the wife of John Carson in March 1773. Soon after the burial of Mrs. Dickerman, two small children were laid in this ground. Following these, twenty-six bodies were buried. Of these, twenty-two were children. Cemetery One was the town’s cemetery for forty-five years (1773-1818), and probably more than five hundred bodies lie there. Since it is such an old cemetery, only veterans from the American Revolution are buried here. Only a few people have head stones or monuments of any kind partly because they were not as common as they are now but also because of the people being too poor to obtain them.

[edit] Cemetery 2

In 1818 the town directed their committee to purchase one half acres of land of James S. Fisher for a new grave yard. This was the Mill Village Cemetery (also known as Cemetery 2). The first burial in this Cemetery was the body of Mrs. Joshua Huntington August 14, 1818. In this cemetery, there are veterans from the Revolution, the Civil War (GAR, Grand Army of the Republic), and the War of 1812.

[edit] Cemetery 3

At the Town Meeting on May 29, 1860, the selectmen were instructed to buy five acres of land on the Turnpike from William Stanley (this was called Cemetery 3). The first burial here was that of Elizabeth, daughter of John Balch, who died July 23, 1860. In this cemetery, the veterans served in The Civil War, World War I & World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and others are in the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and the American Legion.

[edit] Explanation of Project

The purpose of our project has been to document all veterans buried in the three Francestown Municipal Cemeteries, and to present our work to the Francestown Improvement and Historical Society. We referred to the articles and books listed below for cross-references. In doing this we came across a number of names, wars, and dates of the soldiers that did not correspond with the information on their headstones. Therefore our project developed into a catalogue reference of our veterans exactly as found on the headstones.
