Frøya, Norway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Two locations in Norway are named Frøya. Even though the name is exactly the same with the name of the Norse Goddess Frøya (Freya), the islands seem to be named after her brother, Frøy (Frey), as interpretted by professional Norwegian name researchers.[citations needed] But Frey and Freya are a pair of deities whose names were derived from the same root (their names mean Lord and Lady respectively, and the word originally has the meaning of leading or foremost).
