Fourth Avenue is a major thoroughfare in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It stretches approximately 6 miles north to south from the intersection created by Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues in Downtown Brooklyn, to Shore Road and the Belt Parkway in Bay Ridge.
[edit] North to south
From its inception in Downtown Brooklyn till immediately after the Gowanus Expressway overpass in Bay Ridge, Fourth Avenue runs as a six-lane street with a one-lane wide concrete divider which allows for a left turning lane. This concrete divider is actually part of the ventilation system for the BMT Fourth Avenue Line underneath. From the overpass on, Fourth Avenue becomes a four-lane street, divided by a double-solid yellow line, till it reaches Shore Road in view of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
In addition to Downtown Brooklyn and Bay Ridge, through its course, Fourth Avenue also runs through the neighborhoods of Park Slope and Sunset Park.
