[edit] IP Address 62.171.198.4

Fork me wrote:

You have recently threatened to block this IP address. This is a response to that.
This IP address is one used by schools throughout the UK. As a teacher I use it at work. This IP address (and others in the range) is regularly blocked for vandalism and warnings given. This seems to be totally pointless.
I realise that wikipedia has procedures, but there are exceptional circumstances where they clearly won't work and a new resolution needs to be found.
The IfL IP range is used by thousands of people throughout the UK, most of them schoolchildren, the rest school staff. Threatening to block this address will therefore have no effect whatsoever. An IP range that can be used anonymously by thousands of children and teenagers WILL cause vandalism if completely unblocked.
If the range were blocked then myself, other teachers and pupils with the right intentions will all be blocked from editing during the day, however, if unblocked it will cause vandalism. A difficult situation.
Is there any way that the entire IfL IP range could be blocked from ANONYMOUS editing only? This would mean that specific users could then be blocked, but those wishing to genuinely contribute still can.
Being relatively new to wikipedia myself, I don't know the best place to discuss this, perhaps you could point me in the correct direction?
Thanks in advance. Fork me 15:03, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I appreciate your concern. It is in fact possible to block anonymous editing only; I have just done so with 62.171.198.4. This is common practise and has been the standard response to anonymous vandalism since the capability was added to our software a few months ago. If, as you have done, you create an account, you will never be affected by these blocks and you should not recieve any warning messages on your personal talk page.

However, our policies prohibit applying indefinite blocks to IP addresses except under special circumstances (such as open proxies), so the block I have applied will eventually expire, at which point anonymous vandalism is likely to start again, and so more warning messages will be given, and so on.

Blocking IP ranges is more complex, and again is generally done only under special circumstances. If you wish to discuss the matter further, I suggest you post at Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboardGurch 15:21, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ishango

Hey, Fork me, you seem to know a lot about Trinidad and tobago and calypso. Write more article concerning it. You would help us out a lot! Thankx.

[edit] Expansion of WP:BAH - your opinion, please.

I have had the idea of expanding and renaming WikiProject Brighton to become WikiProject Sussex - this would not exclude people with a particular interest in, say, Chichester, Arundel, Worthing, Midhurst, Pulborough, Billingshurst, Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, Winchelsea, etc. - all places worthy of a WikiProject - and I'm not sure that having WP:BAH as a sub-project of WP:Sussex would work. I feel that we are being too exclusive - we could attract new members this way. What do you think? - Vox Humana 8' 17:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your feedback on the above proposal. The response given Matt (a. k. a. User:Hassocks5489) makes sense - I would support WP:BAH being made a separate project to WP:Sussex, but as a kind of sub-project, so that WP:BAH would deal with all of WP:Sussex's B&H business. BAH would certainly be linked to from the Sussex page. I'm rambling a bit here - I don't really quite know what to say - but you get my point, I'm sure. - Vox Humana 8' 13:09, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Brighton is still in the ceremonial county of and is surrounded by Sussex and has been for as long as it has existed. Therefore, Brighton should be referred to as being in Sussex, shouldn't it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vox Humana 8' (talkcontribs) 16:19, 3 April 2007 (UTC).
To be honest, I don't see the point. I've already started WP:Sussex - join if you want, don't if you don't. In any case, you can put on the related Portal stuff about related WikiProjects...--Vox Humana 8' 15:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Hiya. WP:BAH was recently tagged as inactive, although, as I've been doing some BAH-related stuff, I removed the tag. Can we try and get it going again, or do we close it down?--Voxpuppet (talkcontribs) 12:49, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
