[edit] A couple of points

  • "in addition to the standard practice of awarding points for goals scored - this is not "standard practice" in English football at all....
  • "The Football League itself, however, turned down an offer of £600,000 to sponsor its final" - what final would that be then? The Football League does not have a "final".....
  • Also, this article could do with being expanded to clarify the nature of this competition - was it a reserves/youth league? If it was a first team competition, how did it fit in with the clubs' existing football league programme? Was it a summer tournament? Some clarification is definitely needed...... Hi Chris, I know a long time has elapsed, but I was just making a couple of small changes, and thought I'd respond to your concerns.
  1. You say "in addition to the standard practice of awarding points for goals scored - this is not "standard practice" in English football at all... I have corrected this and stated what the points system was.
  2. You say "The Football League itself, however, turned down an offer of £600,000 to sponsor its final" - what final would that be then? The Football League does not have a "final"..... I think someone else had already dealt with this and clarified that it was the League Cup final that was being referred to.
  3. You say Also, this article could do with being expanded to clarify the nature of this competition - was it a reserves/youth league? If it was a first team competition, how did it fit in with the clubs' existing football league programme? Was it a summer tournament? Some clarification is definitely needed...... This is probably the most important of your concerns, and I must admit, it has somewhat flummoxed me, in spite of my having looked up various sources on the competition. It was certainly a senior (rather than a reserve or youth) competition, but I can find no record of matches being played for it, so my guess is that no additional matches were played for the competition, but rather points were derived from existing league fixtures- but to be honest, this is just a guess. I really don't know. If you can ever find out what the situation was really, I'd really love to know! Robotforaday 16:48, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Reading the linked Independent article, it certainly seems to me that this was not a League per se but rather something akin to the current Fair Play League, whereby teams earned points for what they got up to in their regular league fixtures, although there's nothing to specifically confirm that so I won't put it in the article just yet.....
