Formula One, abbreviated to F1 and also known as Grand Prix racing, is the highest class of single-seat open-wheel formula auto racing. It is a worldwide sport, involving an annual World Drivers Championship, most recently won in 2007 by Kimi Raikkonen, and World Constructors Championship, most recently won in 2007 by Ferrari, and is one of the most expensive sports in the world; annual team budgets average in the hundreds of millions of US dollars. It is based around a series of races — 18 in 2008 — known as grands prix, held on either permanent, custom-constructed road courses or temporary, closed-off public street circuits.

The sport is regulated by the FIA, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, and is generally promoted and administered by Bernie Ecclestone, who largely controls the sport's commercial television rights. Read more...

The 1995 Japanese Grand Prix (officially known as the XXI Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix) was a Formula One motor race held on October 29, 1995 at the Suzuka Circuit, Suzuka. It was the 16th and penultimate race of the 1995 Formula One season. The race, contested over 53 laps, was won by Michael Schumacher for the Benetton team after starting from pole position. Mika Häkkinen finished second in a McLaren, and Johnny Herbert third in the other Benetton.

Schumacher won his ninth race of the season, which equalled Nigel Mansell's record for victories in a season that was set in 1992. As both the Williams cars retired from the race, Benetton were confirmed as Constructors' Champions as Williams could not pass Benetton's points total with only one race remaining.

Jean Alesi, driving for Ferrari, started second beside Schumacher. However, since his car had moved forward before the start, he was forced to serve a 10-second stop and go penalty. Alesi climbed up to second, before retiring on lap 25.

Did you know...

...that, even though Williams drivers won the World Championship on seven occasions, only three races in the entirety of F1 history were won by Williams cars bearing the number 1? Those were the 1981 United States Grand Prix West, the 1981 Las Vegas Grand Prix, and the 1983 Monaco Grand Prix -- all of them street races.
...that the 2009 Formula One season will be the 60th World Championship season?
...that the 1974 French Grand Prix marked the only occasion in which F1 saw qualifying times of less than one minute? Twelve drivers managed to do that during qualifying: pole sitter Niki Lauda, eventual winner Ronnie Peterson, Tom Pryce, Clay Regazzoni, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mike Hailwood, Jody Scheckter, Carlos Reutemann, Patrick Depailler, James Hunt, Denny Hulme, and Jean-Pierre Jarier. The unexpectedly short lap times led to the circuit being extended for subsequent F1 races.

June 11 – Former Toyota F1 team principal Ove Andersson is killed in an accident at a classic rally event in South Africa at the age of seventy. [1]
June 8 – Robert Kubica takes his and BMW Sauber's first win in Formula One at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, with team-mate Nick Heidfeld second and Red Bull Racing's David Coulthard third. Kubica also takes the lead of the Drivers' Championship, as rivals Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen were eliminated in a pitlane accident. [2]
June 3 – Max Mosley wins a vote of confidence from the FIA after a scandal invloving his personal life earlier in the year. [3]
May 25 – Lewis Hamilton wins a very damp 2008 Monaco Grand Prix to take back the lead of the World Drivers' Championship from erstwhile leader Kimi Räikkönen, who finished out of the points in ninth position. Robert Kubica took second with Felipe Massa in third. [4]
May 11 – Felipe Massa wins the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix for the third consecutive year. Lewis Hamilton finished second in a Ferrari sandwich, as Kimi Räikkönen finished in third place. [5]
