- September 25 – Fernando Alonso wins the 2005 Drivers Championship to become the youngest ever Formula One World Champion.

- October 3 – The Times suggests that WilliamsF1 is considering signing an extension to the Concorde Agreement and breaking ranks with the GPMA. [1]
- October 4 – Honda takes control of British American Racing by purchasing the 55% share of British American Tobacco.
- October 9 – Kimi Räikkönen wins the Japanese Grand Prix. [2]
- October 15 – Red Bull announces that the Minardi team will be renamed "Squadra Toro Rosso" ("Team Red Bull") in 2006.
- October 16 – The 2005 season comes to a close with Fernando Alonso winning the Chinese Grand Prix which also sees Renault win the Constructors' Championship.

- November 1 – Former F1 driver Aguri Suzuki has applied to start his own team from 2006. The team will be called 'Super Aguri Formula One', will be powered by Honda engines and run on Bridgestone tyres.
- November 1 – Christijan Albers is confirmed as a driver for the new Midland F1 team from 2006. Meanwhile Franz Tost has been installed as the team principal of Red Bull's Squadra Toro Rosso team.
- November 3 – Williams announce that Nico Rosberg (son of 1982 World Champion Keke Rosberg) will partner Mark Webber for the 2006 season. [3]
- November 8 – Designer Adrian Newey joins Red Bull Racing, leaving McLaren. [4]
- November 16 – The 2006 Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix will switch dates, and will now be held on October 1 and October 8, 2006, respectively.
- November 25 – Bernie Ecclestone confirms that the majority share in Formula One has been sold to CVC Capital Partners. Ecclestone will remain as CEO of the F1 company. [5]

- December 6 – Red Bull Racing confirm that Christian Klien will continue as teammate to David Coulthard for 2006. Robert Doornbos will complete Friday testing duties for the team. [6]
- December 6 – Scuderia Toro Rosso announce that Vitantonio Liuzzi and rookie Scott Speed will drive for the team in 2006. [7]
- December 10 – The FIA announce changes to the sport for 2008, including a single tyre supplier and standard-issue ECUs. [8]
- December 14 – Tyre supplier Michelin announce they will pull out of F1 at the end of the 2006 season, leaving Bridgestone as the sole supplier. [9]
- December 14 – Vodafone announce that they will become McLaren's title sponsor for the 2007 season, leaving Ferrari. [10]

- February 1 – Moto GP 7-time world champion Valentino Rossi had a difficult Formula One public test debut at Valenica, as his Ferrari F2004 slid off the circuit into the gravel trap after completing only an installation lap. [14]
- February 8 – The FIA announced the cancellation of the 2006 Belgian Grand Prix to allow time for completion of improvement works to the Spa Francorchamps circuit. [15]
- February 15 – Super Aguri F1 confirm an all-Japanese driver line-up for their first season in F1, with former F1 driver Takuma Sato being joined by newcomer Yuji Ide. [16]

- March 1 – Super Aguri F1 has signed former Renault test driver, Franck Montagny as third driver for the opening two rounds of the F1 Season. [17]
- March 3 – Anthony Davidson smashed Valencia's unofficial track record set by Kimi Räikkönen by 0.9 seconds in a BAR Honda. [18]
- March 8 – A spokesman for the 'rebel' GPMA car manufacturers announces "significant progress" towards a settlement with Bernie Ecclestone. [19]
- March 11 – Michael Schumacher claims pole position at the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix, equaling the 65 pole record set by Ayrton Senna in 1994. [20]
- March 12 – Fernando Alonso wins the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix, narrowly beating Michael Schumacher by just 1.2 seconds. Kimi Raikkonen finished third after starting from the back of the grid. [21]
- March 19 – Giancarlo Fisichella leads team-mate Fernando Alonso to make it a Renault one-two at the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix. Jenson Button takes third-place for Honda.[22]

- March 23 – The FIA announces new regulations for the 2008 season and beyond. Although subject to change measures include return of slick tyres, a ban on tyre warming devices and a three year engine design freeze. [24]
- March 27 – The five 'rebel' GPMA car manufacturers lodge applications for the 2008 season. The likelihood of a breakaway series has reduced as a result. [25]
- March 28 – CVC announces it has completed its purchase of the Formula One Group. [26]
- March 30 – CVC acquires the 14% of the Formula One Group held by Lehman Brothers, giving Alpha Prema full control of the group. [27]
- March 31 – David Richard's Prodrive submits an application to compete in the 2008 Formula One Championship. [28]

- April 2 – Fernando Alonso wins an action-packed Australian Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen finished 2nd and Ralf Schumacher 3rd. [29]
- April 4 – Mike Gascoyne has left Toyota F1. The nature and terms of the move have not been disclosed. [30]
- April 20 – Renault, rumoured for the past two years to be considering an exit from F1, suggests it is prepared to commit for the long term if costs continue to be reduced. [31]
- April 23 – Michael Schumacher wins the San Marino Grand Prix from pole position, leading home Fernando Alonso and Juan Pablo Montoya. [32]
- April 28 – The FIA confirms the teams which will be competing in the 2008 Championship. They are the current 11 teams plus David Richards’ Prodrive. [33]

- May 7 – Michael Schumacher wins the European Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso was second, followed by Felipe Massa. [34]
- May 14 – GPMA members confirm they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, a move toward siging a new Concorde Agreement. [35]
- May 14 – Fernando Alonso wins the Spanish Grand Prix, his first home victory. Michael Schumacher was second and team-mate Fisichella third. [36]
- May 19 – Bernie Ecclestone and CVC Capital Partners sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the GPMA. [37]
- May 28 – Fernando Alonso wins the Monaco Grand Prix. Juan Pablo Montoya was second and David Coulthard third. [38]
- May 27 – Michael Schumacher is demoted from pole position to 22nd for the Monaco Grand Prix after stopping his car during qualifying. Schumacher and Ferrari maintain it was a mistake, however stewards stated "we are left with no alternative but to conclude that the driver deliberately stopped his car on the circuit." [39]

- June 8 – Super Aguri appoint Sakon Yamamoto to be third driver for the next 3 Grand Prix. [40]
- June 21 – Technical director of the Honda F1 team, Geoff Willis, leaves the team. [41]
- June 21 – Giancarlo Fisichella has agreed a new deal with Renault that will keep him at the team until the end of next year. [42]
- June 25 – Fernando Alonso wins the 2006 Canadian Grand Prix for the first time. Michael Schumacher's Ferrari came second and Kimi Raikkonen finished third.

- July 2 – McLaren announce that Juan Pablo Montoya will be replaced by test driver Pedro de la Rosa starting with the French Grand Prix.
- July 2 – Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari won the 2006 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa.
- July 12 – Super Aguri confirm that Franck Montagny will be replaced by Sakon Yamamoto from the 2006 German Grand Prix onwards.
- July 16 – Michael Schumacher wins the 2006 French Grand Prix his eighth victory in France ahead of Fernando Alonso in 2nd and Felipe Massa in 3rd.
- July 25 – Formula One bosses have banned, on safety grounds, the two vertical white fins used by BMW Sauber at the French Grand Prix. The fins were nicknamed "Twin Towers" after BMW sponsor Petronas' buildings in Kuala Lumpur. [43]
- July 30 – Michael Schumacher wins the 2006 German Grand Prix. Felipe Massa was second and Kimi Raikkonen third. Fernando Alonso finished fifth. [44]
- July 27 – WilliamsF1 and Toyota confirmed that an agreement has been reached yesterday evening between the two parties for a three year Formula One engine supply partnership. The agreement will see WilliamsF1 powered by Toyota engines commencing with the 2007 season. [45]
- July 31 – Renault are granted permission to use their "mass damper system" in the Hungarian Grand Prix. The FIA will continue to pursue a ban, but advised that it will not punish teams retrospectively for using the system. [46]

- August 1 – BMW Sauber announce that Robert Kubica shall replace Jacques Villeneuve at the Hungarian GP [47].
- August 2 – Williams announce that Austrian driver Alexander Wurz will partner Nico Rosberg as Williams race driver in 2007. Current driver Mark Webber failed to reach an agreement during contract extension negotiations. At the time, Webber was strongly rumored to join Renault for 2007, however days later Webber signed for Red Bull Racing.
- August 4 – Former Toyota F1 driver Cristiano da Matta has been critically injured following a collision with a deer whilst testing his Champ Car [48]. da Matta is reported to have suffered a Subdural hematoma and is in a medically induced coma.
- August 6 – Jenson Button wins the wet Hungarian Grand Prix in a Honda to win his first GP. Title contenders Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher both failed to finish, although the German managed to score a single point.
- August 7 – Red Bull Racing announce that Mark Webber and David Coulthard will serve as Red Bull drivers in 2007. Webber comes to Red Bull from Williams, while Coulthard has been driving for Red Bull since 2005. The signing of Webber signals the end of Christian Klien's time with the team which extends back to their previous incarnation as Jaguar Racing. Ironically, Klien's team mate in Jaguar's final year was Mark Webber. [49]
- August 22 – Honda F1 have parted company with technical director Geoff Willis by mutual consent, according to a statement released by the team. The move comes after Shuhei Nakamoto was promoted above Willis to the new role of senior technical director following a poor start to the season. [50]
- August 23 – Sebastian Vettel is confirmed as BMW Sauber's third driver. [51]
- August 23 – Mass dampers are banned by the FIA International Court of Appeal, overturning the ruling of FIA stewards at the 2006 German Grand Prix. [52]
- August 27 – Felipe Massa wins his first F1 race at the 2006 Turkish Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso increases his points advantage over Michael Schumacher to 12, having finished in second place with the German third. [53]
- August 29 – The FIA announces the 2007 F1 calendar with the dropping of the San Marino Grand Prix and the European Grand Prix. [54]
- August 31 – The National Sporting Authority of Turkey (TOSFED) and the MSO, the organiser of the Turkish Grand Prix, have been called to appear before a specially convened meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris on September 19 to explain why the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was allowed to present the winner's trophy at last week's Grand Prix. - August 31 – Former Toyota F1 racer, Cristiano da Matta, is no longer in a coma and is beginning to walk and talk, Champ Car doctor Chris Pinderski says.[56]

- September 3 – Adrian Newey, Technical Director of the Red Bull Racing team, is briefly hospitalised after a heavy crash in a Jaguar E-Type whilst competing in a historic event at the Goodwood Revival. [57]
- September 6 – Renault announces that Flavio Briatore is staying in the role of Team Principal, and that Heikki Kovalainen will replace the departing Fernando Alonso in 2007. Ricardo Zonta and Nelson Piquet Jr. are confirmed as test drivers.[58]
- September 6 – Silverstone has announced that it will give fans $95 back if they buy an adult grandstand seat before the end of September 2006 and Jenson Button wins the race in July next year. [59]
- September 9 – The MF1 team is sold to a Dutch consortium lead by Spyker Cars.[60]
- September 10 – Michael Schumacher wins the 2006 Italian Grand Prix, reducing the gap from himself to championship leader Fernando Alonso to just two points. His retirement from racing at the end of the year is announced immediately after the race, and Kimi Räikkönen is confirmed as his replacement.[61] [62]
- September 10 – Christian Klien leaves the Red Bull Racing team after refusing a Red-Bull backed ChampCar drive for 2007. - October 8 – Fernando Alonso wins the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix after Michael Schumacher retires from the lead with an engine failure. Alonso now only needs to score one point in Brazil to win the championship. [71]
- October 12 – A contract is signed between Bernie Ecclestone and the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps management team, guaranteeing the return of the Belgian Grand Prix in 2007. [72]
- October 13 – McLaren have confirmed that Pedro de la Rosa will be driving the second car for the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix, ending Lewis Hamilton's chances of getting the seat. [73]

- December 20 – Reigning Champ Car World Series champion Sebastien Bourdais is a serious contender for a race drive in 2008 with Scuderia Toro Rosso after impressing the team's co-principal Gerhard Berger with his pace in a recent three-day test at Jerez. [86]

- January 16 – BMW Sauber have launched their 2007 car, the F1.07. The team's main target is consistent podium finishes. [91]
- January 23 – Spyker F1 have annouced that their 2007 car, still to be named, will be launched on February 5. [92]
- January 24 – Renault have launched their 2007 chassis, the R27. [93]

- February 4 – The Spyker F8-VII chassis has been launched for the 2007 season by the Spyker F1 team. [97]
