The Fortress of Miolans was located in the territory of Savoy in a remote area between Italy and France from which the Marquis de Sade staged a jailbreak with two companions; his valet Latour, and Baron de l'Alee. The Marquis had requested that he and his companions be allowed to dine in a room within the main dining area, adjacent to a room containing unbarred windows. The three of them subsequently made their escape through the nearby unbarred windows while the guards were having their dinner.
The Marquis instructed Latour to leave a candle burning in his room, along with a note on the table to his guard. Much later, the guard and the Commandant opened the room to find it empty but for the note. In his note, the Marquis praised the decency with which he had been treated and expressed his hope that the guard would not be held accountable for his escape. However, by the time this was discovered several hours had passed, and it was too late to gather a search party.
