[edit] History

Fort Thomas was named for Lorenzo Thomas, Adjutant General of the U.S. Army at the beginning of the American Civil War.[3] The original fort was established in the Summer of 1876, six miles east of Camp Goodwin. Two years later, it was moved to the site of the present town of Fort Thomas and became regimental headquarters for the 3rd U.S. Cavalry. Fort Thomas was an active military post from the Battle of Cibecue until Geronimo's final surrender in 1886. The army abandoned the post in Spring 1891.[3]
