Fort Lonesome, Florida

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fort Lonesome is an unincorporated, rural ghost town located in southeastern Hillsborough County, Florida, United States, 36 miles southeast of Tampa and east of the Little Manatee River State Park. A sawmill plant briefly revived the area with a few houses and three stores in the early 1930s. It was short-lived. A fire destroyed the mill and eventually the "town" disappeared.

Today, the area is mainly a farming region. Phosphate mining activity and strawberry and tomato farms dominate. The area is changing, as Brandon expands southerly and growth moves from both the east and west. The corner of Highway 39 and Highway 674 is known locally as "Booger Man's Corner".
