Fort Grant, Arizona
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fort Grant, located in the US state of Arizona, initially built in Aravaipa Canyon, was an Old West fort established in 1860 and in operation at its original location until 1872.
The fort was strategically placed so as to serve as a protective force for settlers who were constantly harassed by Apache warriors. It was later moved to Graham Mountain, in what is now Graham County, and played a prominent role in the Apache Wars of the 1880s. The fort was abandoned in 1898 and left unoccupied except for a caretaker. Since 1912 the fort has been occupied by the Arizona State Industrial School, which has modernized most of the buildings.
