A formaldehyde releaser is a chemical compound that slowly releases formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde releasers are often used an antimicrobial preservative in cosmetics. Examples include:

  • Quaternium-15
  • Imidazolidinyl urea (Germall 115)
  • Diazolidinyl urea (Germall II)
  • DMDM hydantoin (Glydant)
  • 2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol) (formaldehyde release is not related to mechanism of action)
  • Tris(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane (Tris Nitro)
  • Hydroxymethylglycinate (Suttocide A)
