A formaldehyde releaser is a chemical compound that slowly releases formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde releasers are often used an antimicrobial preservative in cosmetics. Examples include:
- Quaternium-15
- Imidazolidinyl urea (Germall 115)
- Diazolidinyl urea (Germall II)
- DMDM hydantoin (Glydant)
- 2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol) (formaldehyde release is not related to mechanism of action)
- Tris(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane (Tris Nitro)
- Hydroxymethylglycinate (Suttocide A)
