Forest Hill railway station is situated in Forest Hill, part of the London Borough of Lewisham: the station is located on the South Circular Road (A205). There are four tracks through the station, although only the slow lines (the two outer tracks) have platforms. It lies between Honor Oak Park and Sydenham stations.
It was one of the original London & Croydon Railway stations opened on 5 June 1839, its original name was Dartmouth Arms from the name of the local inn. Its full name became Forest Hill for Lordship Lane under its owners, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, who built new station buildings. These have now been replaced by a more modern system-built structure, after the loss of the original buildings in the World War Two. The current whereabouts of the plaque commemorating the historic visit of Frank Bruno is not known. It was last seen before repainting in late 2005.
As with most of the National Rail network in London, Oyster pay-as-you-go is currently not accepted for journeys starting or ending at the station - however Travelcards loaded onto Oyster cards are accepted as long as they cover the requisite zones.
Forest Hill will form part of the new southbound route of the East London Line that is due to open in 2010 and form part of the London Overground.
[edit] Services
The typical off-peak service is six trains an hour northbound to London Bridge and six trains an hour southbound, of which two run to Sutton via West Croydon, two to Caterham via East Croydon and two London Victoria, via Crystal Palace.
