A forensic meteorologist is an expert in forensic meteorology, researching weather events for a specific previous time and place. This is usually required for weather-related incidents and accidents and is frequently used in civil and criminal cases and for insurance claims. These can include range from a slip and fall down on snow and ice or a murder charge, where weather may have been a factor. The results are found when a forensic weather consultant performs a detailed analysis of the weather after acquiring official weather records from locations near or surrounding the incident location.
