Fordham Road

Fordham Road is a major street in The Bronx borough of New York City. It is also location of the longest retail strip in the borough of the Bronx. It runs through east-west from the Harlem River to Bronx Park. This street runs through the neighborhood of University Heights, divides Fordham from Fordham-Bedford and finally runs along the northern border of Belmont. It begins at its eastern point as a continuation of Pelham Parkway and at its western point, continues over the University Heights Bridge into Manhattan, where it runs as West 207th Street. It is a two-way, four-lane road.

Fordham Road is divided into east and west by Jerome Avenue following after the Manhattan grid, with address numbers for both the East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road increasing away from Jerome Avenue.

There are many stores along Fordham Road between Jerome and Webster Avenues. Most of the stores are inexpensive and Hip-Hop oriented unlike most other stores in New York City.

Beyond Webster Avenue and directly across from Fordham University, at Fordham Plaza, is a major hub for buses and a stop on the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem and New Haven lines. The Hudson Line also stops at the University Heights station.

The many bus lines in the area include the Bx55, Bx15, Bx17, Bx41, Bx19, Bx9 and Bx22 routes.

The Bx12 runs along the entire length of Fordham Road.

  • Rose Hill Campus of Fordham University at 441 East Fordham Road.
  • New York Botanical Garden at the eastern terminus of Fordham Road in Bronx Park.
  • The Bronx Zoo also at the eastern terminus of Fordham Road in Bronx Park.
  • St Nicholas of Tolentine Church is a prominent landmark on West Fordham Road at University Avenue in University Heights.

[edit] Safety precautions

Many social problems associated with poverty from violent crime to drug dealing have plagued the surrounding areas for some time now. Robbery being the most common violent incident effecting shoppers. Fordham Road is now monitored by the NYPD using closed circuit surveillance cameras mounted high on telephone and light poles to help keep shoppers safe. Footpost patrolling the retail strip have also increased in recent years.
