Ford 6+6 trucks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "6+6" was the nickname of a heavy duty work truck package available on certain Ford F-Series trucks which consisted of the Ford 4.9L I-6 (300 cubic inch) engine mated to the Ford C6 transmission hence the name "6+6". It was available on the F-150 and F-250 pickups. The trucks were mostly "no frills" base models but any trim level could be so equipped. By the 1980s, the 300 six had gained a great reputation for its longevity, often going for more than 300,000 miles before an overhaul was needed.[citation needed] It was a stout engine with 7 main bearings and timing gears rather than a chain or belt which could break.[citation needed] The C6 was Ford's strongest automatic transmission at the time.[citation needed] This transmission is very popular among drag racers and monster trucks.[citation needed] This drivetrain combo was very durable and often outlasted the truck's chassis due to a hard working life, which makes the un-abused survivors highly sought after.[citation needed] This package was more than likely offered until the end of the 1996 model year when the 4.9L engine and the C6 transmission were both discontinued for use in light trucks.[citation needed]
