For King and Country
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For King and Country is a short film directed by Neil Carroll in 2007.
The event occurs in Belgium (Poperinge Military Prison in Flanders) during the First World War. Two soldiers, Captain Phillip Levaul-Grimwood and Second Lieutenant Edward Brennan are facing their last few hours together. At dawn, one of them will be executed for desertion. But maybe not who you'd think of ...
The movie is mainly a huit-clot. The main action happens in the cell where the Captain (a Chaplain) and the Second Lieutenant are talking, with two outside flash-backs. The rhythm is slow, oppressive. The sepia coloring and the dim lights add also to that effect.
This movie, shot in two days with Hollyoaks fame Nick Pickard and Matt Littler, is dedicated to the 346 British and Commonwealth soldiers shot at dawn between 1914-1918.

"I didn't see right to stand there and watch. I had to be there for my men. For their body and souls. There's no point of saving a man's soul after he has been blown to pieces. I thought if I was there, fighting with them by their side, I could like maybe help them." (Grimwood)
