A by-product of the Southern California post war boom, Fontana (FoHi)was built to serve the thousands of blue collar families from across the country who came to work at the Kaiser Steel plant - built in the 1940s - and at the time the only steel production plant of its kind west of the Mississippi. The area continued to grow for the next four decades. By the 1970's, many came to know Fontana also by its high school football team, the FoHi Steelers.
After struggling for many years, the Steelers came to dominate regional high school football for roughly a 15 year period, peaking in the mid to late 1980's when it was ranked among the nation's best. The FoHi football program spawned a following of the type rarely seen at that time in laid back southern California. The team was the source of tremendous pride in the community. On Friday nights, much of the town shut down as more than 10,000 maroon and white clad fans filled Steeler Stadium for epic battles with rival schools like Redlands, Pacific, Eisenhower and Colton.
The Steelers were almost as well known for their traveling "rowdy" fanbase, which followed the team en masse throughout the season and into the playoffs.
After more than a decade of annual playoff appearances, three CIF Championship games (including two victories)as well as a USA Today National High School Championship - the Steelers were a national powerhouse.
