It has been used as a literary device in stories such as Childhood's End, by Arthur C. Clarke, in which human ideas of demons are derived from folk memories of an alien race who had visited once before, and whose appearance portends the end of the human race.
- I was going to add this but then I see from the other article that this was "reverse race memory" (it's been a while since I read it), that they were remembering the future or something.
