Fogtown
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nickname given to the combined demographic of the most easterly cities of Newfoundland, Canada (St. John's, CBS, Topsail, etc). Coined by musicians from the underground hardcore music scene, the term is a nod towards Dogtown, and references the area's disposition towards extreme fogginess and rainy weather. St. John's is the foggiest city in North America, with 117 days of fog per year. Though there are conflicting accounts of who the exact originator of the nickname is, it is generally accepted that they were a member of the hardcore punk group Grind To Five. First used by a small number of friends and band mates, the term appeared on various hardcore paraphernalia (varsity jacket, demo inserts, t-shirts, graffiti, tattoos, etc) and later trickled down to the general populace of the "Fogtown scene". Fogtown often appeared in online journals and social networking web pages in the biography sections.
