Flying Childers Stakes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Flying Childers Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres) at Doncaster Racecourse during the St. Leger meeting in September.
It was first run in 1967 and was originally known as the Norfolk Stakes. This was changed to the present title in 1973, named after the 18th century racehorse Flying Childers, a son of the Darley Arabian bred at Cantley Hall in Doncaster. The change was due to the re-naming of a race at Royal Ascot, the present Norfolk Stakes, previously called the New Stakes. From 1973 to 1979 the Flying Childers Stakes was classed as a Group 1 race.
