Florida Youth Orchestra

The Florida Youth Orchestra provides orchestral training for students ages 5 to 19, as well as various community outreach programs. Over 300 members participate in FYO’s five orchestra divisions, along with a staff of 22 music professionals. FYO was founded in 1988 by Bob and Myra Weaver. [1]

[edit] Divisions

The Florida Youth Orchestra’s Principal Orchestra consists of over 100 advanced students. The FYO Symphony is for students at a high intermediate level. String students at all levels perform in Repertory Strings, Chamber Strings and Alpha Strings. [2]

FYO membership is determined through competitive auditions held annually in the spring. Acceptance is based on talent and potential with no consideration for nationality, race, religion or socio-economic circumstance. [3]

[edit] Faculty and staff

FYO’s Music Director is Thomas M. Sleeper. Mr. Sleeper earned his Bachelor's in Music Education at the University of Texas, and his Master's in Conducting at Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University in Dallas. At age 22, he was appointed to his first position as Associate Conductor of the Dallas Civic Symphony and the SMU Chamber Orchestra and Opera Theater. [4]

Dr. Claudio Jaffe earned his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Yale University.[5]

Dr. David William Brubeck is a full-time member of the music faculty at Miami-Dade College, Kendall Campus, where he serves as Instrumental Program Coordinator and conducts the concert band and brass ensemble. [6]

Huifang Chen holds a Masters of Music from the University of Miami. Mrs. Chen is on the faculty of UM's Frost School of Music. [7]

Yue Tang is a graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. [8]

[edit] Performances and recordings

The Florida Youth Orchestra has three professional recordings, and has performed concerts in Carnegie Hall (New York) and the Kennedy Center (Washington DC). [9]

FYO also performed in Jamestown, Virginia as representatives of Florida at America’s 400th anniversary celebration. [10]

In 2008, Florida Youth Orchestra received the Moretti Award given annually by the Cultural Foundation of Broward.[11]

[edit] Outreach programs

Florida Youth Orchestra’s outreach programs include a summer music camp at Kids In Distress; “Generations” concerts for elder adults; the “Major Music Presents” series of concerts for children under age 12; and a Distinguished Artist Lecture Series with musicians, music educators, and composers.
