State Road 54 is located in the Tampa Bay Area, north of Tampa itself, and runs from US 301 in Zephyrhills, in the east to US 19 in Holiday in the west. In between it passes through Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, and Elfers.
There is a gap in the route between the western terminus of State Road 56 and the northern terminus of State Road 581 that is filled by Pasco County Road 54. Currently, a West Zephyrhills Bypass is being proposed between the intersection with CR 577 and the north end of merger of CR 54 and CR 579, which would be ideal for both a realignment and a revival of the state designation segment between US 301 in Zephyrhills and US 98 in Polk County
