This school, which was in operation from 1975 until 1987 under principal Charles Whiteley, attracted students who hoped to learn in a disciplined environment. By the early 1980s, students at The Flint Academy were earning some of the top test scores in the city. The school sports teams were known as The Eagles, and their colors were Blue and Gold. Alumni include Arlesia Fields, a news reporter for Channel 12 in Flint, and the Triplett brothers, who were part of the 1980s band Ready for the World.
Flint Southwestern Academy has recently undergone changes in an attempt to improve graduation rates. In the fall of 2006, the freshmen were moved to another building because of problem regarding students moving to other districts. 7-8 & 10-12 stayed over at the main building but more recently, the district moved the 7th and 8th graders to another building to control overcrowding at the Southwestern building.
