Flemings (supermarkets)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flemings is a chain of supermarkets in Sydney, Australia. The chain is owned by Woolworths Limited and only four supermarkets still trade under the Flemings brand name. Internally they are known as Woolworths, feature the same marketing materials and carry the same home brand products. The four remaining Flemings supermarkets are located at Bexley North, Jannali, Pendle Hill and Umina Beach (on the Central Coast).
[edit] History
The first Flemings stores were opened in 1930 by Jim Fleming Sr. and George Fleming. They initially traded under the name "E.L. Lakin". Following World War II, the business boomed and the name changed to "Flemings Food Stores". By the time Flemings was sold out to Woolworths in June 1960, there were 55 stores operating under the "Flemings" banner in Sydney.
The Fleming family continued operating the chain through Woolworths for the next 10 years before they began operating the now-defunct Jewel Food Stores supermarket chain. Many Flemings stores were closed or re-badged as Woolworths, Woolworths Metro stores.
The current Flemings logo was launched in the early 1990s, although it is no longer internally used.
