Talk:Flatlander
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The usage of "flatlander" is way wider than the UP. Folks in Wisconsin use it to refer to people in Illinois, and in northern New England it's a term meaning "non-native". Anyone else have versions used
IMHO, either this entry needs to be broadened, or the article absorbed back into Yooper -- Kaszeta 15:45, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I've reworded this entry and rearranged by region (my very first Wikipedia edit!). In particular, the first graf claiming that the only true usage is that by people from the Rockies to refer to everyone else, and that other people have adopted it to "make up for their own inadequacies," was pretty silly. --169.253.4.21 15:40, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
In my experience (southern Alberta), it's most often used to describe people from Saskatchewan - not just everything east. --Lonelywurm 07:55, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Merge needed
The Flatlander article dates to October 9, 2004, while the Flatlanders article is even older, created September 6, 2004. Both articles cover the same topic, so they should really be merged, preferably to the singular form. Since both have extensive histories, a move would need to be done by an administrator. In the meantime, I redirected the singular article to the plural one, because the latter was larger, but the other alternative would serve as well. --Blainster 21:36, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Expand, merge or redirect
This page is a mere dictionary definition (something which Wikipedia is not). It explains the various meanings and regional usages a slang term. I can't find any encyclopedic content on this page. Nothing here rises past what I would expect to read in a truly great unabridged dictionary. The definitions and usage discussions belong over in Wiktionary where folks with the right skills, interests and lexical tools can more easily sort out the meanings and origins.
Options to fix the page here include:
- Expand the page with encyclopedic content - that is, content that goes well beyond the merely lexical.
- Redirect the page to a more general page on the appropriate sub-genre of slang.
- Replace the current contents with a soft-redirect to Wiktionary (usually done using the {{wi}} template).
- Turn it into a disambiguation page for the various related usages of the term.
Pending a better answer, I'm implementing option 4 for now. Rossami (talk) 22:09, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
