I don't know why this used to redirect to Limited animation - I don't see any evidence for this as a synonym. I've redirected to Internet cartoon since all the pages linking here used it in that sense. —Quarl (talk) 2006-01-20 05:31Z

Could be.

The entire article is littered with weasely adjectives and qualifiers, and there is a key fallacy in the premise that "Flash animation" rightly refers to anything that is not presented via the Flash renderer (swf) -- regardless of what software is used for production. A cartoon-style film produced using more elabourate tools (be it Toon Boom Studio, Anime Studio, or even some 3D program using a cel shading renderer) and output to video for web distribution (DivX, windows streaming video, etc.) should not be lumped together with the real-time rendered vector Flash animations.

Real-time vector rendering method should probably be isolated in this regard (is there any other format for this on the web besides Flash?), traditional video formats converted to the "Flash Video" format (flv) may qualify in a very broad argument. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.111.226.32 (talk) 20:44, 2 May 2008 (UTC)


[edit] Macromedia Flash only?

Is it true that flash comics can be created only with Macromedia Flash? The article seems to implly that multiple times. Many programs export to flash, take Apple's Keynote for example, it's fairly easy to make a limited cartoon using that. Besides, there's the ming library that allows creating flash movies using php or perl scripts. --Lorn 23:07, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

No, other programs, such as Toon Boom Studio, can be used to create Flash animation as well, often better (or in a more user-friendly way) than Flash itself can.

Not all Flash animations are cartoons, so I propose that this article be renamed "Flash animation" instead. Polls are evil and all of that, but I would like some feedback regarding this idea. Thoughts? RFerreira 05:24, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Removed the tag after some improvements (I think). Someone in the know should add more famous examples besides Krikfalusi, like "Happy Tree Friends" and such. Maybe as a list. The picture isn't really informative, if I find time, I'll try a more typical one. Slowtiger

I can help with adding more examples (this is aaron from coldhardflash.com). I've spent the better part of the last 3 years cataloging the character animation portion of Flash animation on my site. [edit] Feature films

I'd like to start a section or subsection about the use of Flash to create feature films. A few have been released, and more are on the way, among them a few interesting independent productions. Here are the ones that I've found:

The Fairly OddParents films (I'm not sure that they're flash-animated, but the show is so I'm assuming that they are as well) were only released on TV, and a few are on DVD. The Russian films will be getting theatrical releases. "Sealed with a Kiss" is all animated by one person and is currently in theatres (touring around the US) - apparently the creator used Moho, not just Flash (not what it is really as I've never used Moho). "Minushi" is an independent production (all animated by one person) and may play in a few film festivals - the creator isn't sure right now and is talking with distributors. "Nim's Journey" is a long-term independent project that is quite far from being completed.

Does anybody know of any more films? I'd like to make sure that all the information is there before the section is added. Esn 00:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

--"Lil' Pimp" (USA, produced 2002, released 2005) was a Flash animated feature (I've updated the main article with a reference to it, although you may want to move it into the new section when it's complete), and also Cartoon Network's recently produced TV feature "Re-Animated" was produced at Renegade Animation using Flash, although it combines it with live action. I have never ever read a good explanation on what Flash Animation actually is. How are the animation created? With a mouse, with a stylus and a graphic tablet or another way? What kind of hardware is used? Is flash the main definition on animation created directly on the screen? If not, what is the common name on this animation genre? How many genres can it be divided into? What is the main difference between Flash and similar stuff? Describing the program and in what way the animation can be used, is like talking about the cameras and how to use traditional cel animation, but not mention the animation techniques with a single word. 217.68.114.116 13:30, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] KoolMoves as a viable option to other flash software

Regardless who, when, why or how anyone references KoolMoves in the Flash Animation wiki entry, someone removes it and marks it "RV advertising". I am completely unaffiliated with KoolMoves short of the fact that I am an end user of the product and it is a wonderful, viable option to the other software listed in the wiki. Why on earth do you people keep removing the link? Yes, it is advertising the product, just as all the other links to other options are advertising thier products. [edit] FutureSplash forerunner of Macromedia Flash

Just a note about Macromedia developing Flash. Macromedia bought the program from a small group of developers who had marketed the software as "FutureSplash" with the file extension .spl. I have some animations with that file extension I created in 1996 and they can still play in the Flash player. There was no coding (actionscript), but the basic layout is still the same: vector drawing, layers, scenes, tweens (both motion and shape). The animations I did was a ballerina performing allegro combinations. I used this software for over a year before Macromedia acquired it. Its purpose was to provide animated content with a very small file size at a time when the most common connection to the Internet was dial-up with a 28.8 or 56k modem. The small file size was possible because of vector art capability as opposed to raster (bitmap) and the revolutionary player engine design. Though Macromedia developed the application far above the simple original program, the basic form is still the same. I have consistently kept up with the Flash authoring software through all the versions until the Adobe buyout of Macromedia. FutureSplash should be noted in the development of Flash; its vector program, player engine, and tweening animations are still the base for Flash.
